The Learning Coach

The Learning Coach
This vehicle was built as a passenger coach by the LMS railway at Wolverton in 1924.

It was withdrawn from passenger use in 1957, and converted to a Riding & Tool Van for use in breakdown trains.

The Van was withdrawn from use at Northwich where it was gifted to the ‘8E Association’, a group of enthusiasts who helped with the servicing of steam locomotives that visited Northwich Motive Power Depot during the 1980s. On the closure of the depot in 1984 the riding van was sold and transferred to the Dinting Railway Centre. It moved to the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway in 1990 on the relocation of the Bahamas Locomotive Society collection, who
commenced its conversion to an educational facility in 2013. This was part of a Heritage Lottery Fund supported project to overhaul former LMS passenger locomotive 45596 Bahamas.

Some of the original compartments have been restored to reflect its original use, while the former tool space has been refurbished as a classroom and exhibition space.

The coach accepted its first school groups in 2016 and was nominated for a Heritage Railway Award in 2018.
