Railways & Transport through the Industrial Revolution


This workshop is designed to be taught in two sections where
the groups switch places after lunch. The class would be split into two groups with one learning about the industrial aspects of the railways and the other exploring the social and leisure aspects as well as key events such as war and the British Empire.

Industrial Aspects:  Explore how and why the railways were created, the impact this had on the industrial and economic fabric of Britain and how this evolved. From the height of the railways and industrial revolution, through to their decline and current renaissance. You will explore how it affected the working lives of the population. This workshop aims to build understanding and appreciation of the history of the railways, the change in trends over time and their causes. Pupils will also explore elements of geography.

Social and Leisure Aspects: Discover the impact the railways have had on the history of Britain. Understand how leisure and commercial travel were affected by the railways and how they were instrumental in building the Empire. Explore how they played an important role during wartime, including the vital role women played. The workshop encourages an understanding of British history.
